Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag | Vibrating Sensory Bean Bag

Discover a different way to experience music and sound with the Southpaw Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag. Combining comfortable, supportive sensory seating with powerful low-frequency vibrations, this vibrating bean bag transforms music and audio into physical sensations that can be felt throughout the body.

Designed for sensory rooms, special educational needs settings, occupational therapy clinics and other multi-sensory environments, this specialist therapy bean bag offers an engaging way to explore touch, sound and vibration. Its durable, water-resistant fabric makes it a practical choice for everyday supervised sensory activities.

Important: A compatible amplifier is required for the bean bag to vibrate appropriately. Our amplifier is sold separately. For reliable performance and independent control of vibration and audible sound, we recommend the Southpaw Amplifier.

Feel the Music, Not Just Hear It

At the heart of the Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag is a powerful tactile transducer, also known as a bass shaker. Unlike a conventional loudspeaker, which moves air to produce audible sound, the bass shaker transfers low-frequency audio energy directly into the bean bag, creating vibrations that can be experienced through the body.

This provides an additional sensory dimension to music, rhythm and sound, allowing users to engage with audio through physical vibration rather than listening alone.

The built-in bass shaker is not designed to function as a conventional music speaker. If you would like users to hear music alongside the vibrations, external speakers can also be connected to the Southpaw Amplifier.

Why Choose Southpaw's Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag?

  • Powerful vibro-acoustic technology: An integrated tactile transducer converts low-frequency audio into physical vibrations that can be felt through the bean bag.
  • Comfortable, supportive sensory seating: The bean-filled design moulds around the body, providing a relaxed and comfortable position for sensory exploration.
  • Adjustable sensory experience: When connected to the Southpaw Amplifier, vibration intensity and audible sound can be controlled independently, helping tailor the experience to individual preferences.
  • Durable and practical: Strong, water-resistant, wipe-clean fabric is suited to regular use in schools, sensory rooms and therapy environments.
  • Three sizes available: Choose from Small, Medium or Large to suit different users and sensory room layouts.
  • Choice of colours: Available in a range of colours to complement existing sensory room equipment and interiors.

Therapeutic Benefits of Vibro-Acoustic Sensory Seating

The Southpaw Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag provides controllable vibrotactile stimulation, combining the sensation of vibration with the gentle tactile pressure of supportive seating. When appropriately selected and supervised, it can contribute to individual sensory experiences and occupational therapy activities.

  • Sensory modulation and self-regulation: Gentle, predictable vibrations may provide a calming sensory experience for users who find this type of input comfortable. Adjusting the intensity allows therapists, teachers and carers to respond to individual sensory preferences and arousal levels in the moment.
  • Tactile stimulation and body awareness: Low-frequency vibrations deliver sensory information through contact with the body. Combined with the enveloping support of the bean bag, this offers opportunities to explore touch, pressure and body awareness, including sensory experiences relevant to proprioceptive processing.
  • Relaxation and comfort: Rhythmic vibration, comfortable seating and familiar music can create a pleasant, settling experience. Some users may find this useful during relaxation sessions or transitions between activities.
  • Multi-sensory engagement: Combining vibration with optional audible music allows users to explore the relationship between sound, rhythm and physical sensation. This can encourage curiosity, attention and engagement during sensory activities.
  • Choice and active participation: Users can be encouraged to select preferred music, rhythms and vibration levels, communicate their preferences and decide when to begin or stop. This supports personalised, user-led sensory experiences.
  • Supports individual sensory programmes: Occupational therapists can incorporate the bean bag into structured sensory activities, adjusting the type, intensity and duration of stimulation to match individual goals, responses and tolerances.

Occupational therapy guidance: Responses to vibro-acoustic stimulation vary between individuals. This equipment can complement therapist-directed sensory programmes but does not independently constitute Ayres Sensory Integration® therapy or guarantee lasting therapeutic improvements.

Ideal for Sensory Rooms, Schools and Therapy Environments

The Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag is a versatile addition to sensory rooms for schools, SEND provisions, occupational therapy clinics, hospitals and suitable home sensory spaces.

It can be incorporated into supervised relaxation areas, interactive music activities, sensory exploration sessions and personalised sensory room programmes. Used alongside appropriate sensory lighting, sound equipment and other sensory resources, it offers another way to create an engaging and adaptable multi-sensory environment.

Amplifier and Connection Requirements

An amplifier is essential for operation and is not included with the bean bag.

For the best performance, we recommend pairing your Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag with the Southpaw Amplifier (901301), designed to work with Southpaw's vibro-acoustic equipment.

The amplifier provides independent adjustment of the vibration and audible audio output. This means users can experience stronger physical vibrations without requiring correspondingly high listening volumes, allowing greater flexibility when creating a personalised sensory experience.

The Southpaw Amplifier also provides convenient audio connectivity, including Bluetooth, USB and phono connections.

Using Your Own Amplifier

The Vibro-Acoustic Bean Bag is supplied with a single mono lead with a female RCA connector.

If you intend to connect the bean bag to an existing amplifier or third-party audio system, you will need to source the appropriate connecting cable or adaptor for your equipment.

Important: Not all amplifiers are suitable for driving a tactile transducer. An RCA socket alone does not guarantee compatibility. Please confirm your amplifier's technical suitability, connection requirements and warranty implications with Southpaw before connecting third-party equipment.

For a straightforward, fully matched Southpaw setup, we recommend purchasing the Southpaw Amplifier alongside your bean bag.
